Satisfy your Seafood and Hong Kong Roast Cravings at Crab Corner and Heavenly Duck House
An advantage of living in a small country is the ability to travel the across the island for good food with little time and cost! There is a multitude of reputable Chinese restaurants in town, where families or working partners gather to share a meal and catch up with good times.
Last week, we traveled to the west of Singapore to try out this humble establishment called ‘Crab Corner,’ tucked in the 3rd level of FairPrice hub that is linked to Joo Koon MRT station! Crab Corner has recently revamped and is currently sharing the same roof with its sister business, Heavenly Duck House, specialising in Hong Kong roasted delights and Dim Sum.
We were highly delighted with the taste and quality of the food from this understated restaurant that has been established since 2014. Headed by an Executive Chef from Hong Kong, who holds more than 40 years of experience in the industry, the restaurant serves a variety of authentic Hong Kong roasted delicacies. We consider this a rare gem in Singapore, worth travelling for!
Introducing four magnificent and irresistible dishes in one ultimate platter, the Four Heavenly Kings Platter ($48) is a perfect dish for all Chinese food lovers. It consists of Heavenly Duck Signatures: Crispy Roasted Pork, Crispy Roasted Duck, Soy Sauce Chicken and Barbecued Pork (Char Siew), served with 3 zesty sauces.
This platter is good for sharing among 6 to 9 people, though we managed to share it among 11 of us at the table! The Soy Sauce Chicken tastes light, fresh and has a melt-in-the-mouth texture. You can pair it with the vegetal sauce that exudes the aroma of spring onions. The finely cut and Crispy Roasted Pork (belly) is super-crusty on the skin and succulent on the meat, you could hear the crunch as you indulge in each bite. It tastes full and not too salty. The Barbecue pork is generously marinated, saucy and tastes sweet, love the tenderness of the pork. My favourite from this platter is the Crispy Roasted Duck. It is full-flavoured, tender and simply mouth-watering. The crispy, well-roasted skin also reminds me of Peking duck.
Another of my favourite dishes at Crab Corner is the Appetizer Pork Ribs with Special Sauce ($16 small, $22 medium, $26 large). I had my fair share of pork ribs, which are harder in texture and requires lots of chewing. However, this fragrant plate of pork ribs is easily chewed and the meat falls off the bones readily. The texture of the pork ribs is crisp and not too thick. The special sauce completes the dish with the right about of sweetness and you can taste hints of citrusy flavours from the glazed ribs.
This alluring plate of Golden Salad Prawn ($18 small, $24 medium, $28 large) is de-shelled and coated with creamy and sweet salad sauce. It is crunchy and the prawns are delicious, fresh and springy. It is a dish that will brighten up a dull day.
Next, we were pleasantly surprised by this banquet-standard Stir Fried Mushroom Fish Maw with Broccoli ($10.80 small, $15.80 medium, $18.80 large). The dish is warm, flavourful and packed with collagen. There are a number of soft, bouncy, gelatinized fish maws that soaked up the rich and savoury sauce. One thing I love about Crab corner is the way they execute the texture of the food. The mushrooms here are soft, slippery and easy to go down as well.
For those who love fish head curry, the Authentic Curry Fish Head ($26.80) is blended with a specialty curry mix of Crab Corner’s and made into a paste in a claypot. The fresh fish head is simmered in the aromatic pot of coconut-based curry, onions, red chillies, turmeric and ginger flowers. It is medium-spicy, not too oily and flavourful. Some parts of the curry remind me of our local favourite laksa curry.
Good news for those who can’t get enough of the chilli crab gravy, Crab Corner has theirs in a claypot full of it! The Claypot Chilli Crab (Seasonal Price) at Crab Corner tastes slightly different from most chilli crabs I’ve tasted in Singapore. It is rich and eggy, leaning towards the sweet side. The crab meat is fresh and appetizing, while the gravy is mild spicy. The spiciness kicks in as you consume more of the sauce.
We finished up the claypot Chilli Crab, as well as every bit of the gravy by dipping in warm and tasty deep-fried man tou! Simply satisfying!
Finally, we had a refreshing sweet-sour bowl of Lemongrass Jelly ($3.80), a simple dessert that brings comfort and glee.
Be sure to add Crab Corner to your festive list as you ponder about which Chinese restaurant to patronise! Other signature dishes include Black Pepper Crab, Special Sauce Crispy Beancurd with Crabmeat and Congee with Cuttlefish, Sliced Fish, Pig’s Skin & Peanuts. There’s also an ala carte menu that is popular with the lunch crowd.
