Yum..... Cha has delicious dim sum!

Travelling abroad has made me appreciate Singapore’s endless array of food offerings even more. Now that National Day is here, one can sense the vibrancy of Singapore’s food culture simply by observing how some restaurants whip up their proudest rendition of the local favourite dishes! Yum Cha surely knows its way to lead the game by introducing an enticing marriage between the mouth-watering Bak Kut Teh and all-time dim sum staple, Xiao Long Bao! (Available from July 29th to August 13th only.) Apart from this, Yum Cha has also introduced a few new additions to its menu, such as Charcoal Duck Bun and Sesame Custard Ball!

肉骨茶小籠包 Bak Kut Teh Xiao Long Bao ($5.20 / 3pcs) – Limited Period only

Kudos to the chef behind Yum Cha for this brilliant idea to pack our local favourite Bak Kut Teh into bite-size morsels, allowing the flavours to burst in the mouth with each bite! You would probably have guessed that these gelatinous Bak Kut Teh Xiao Long Bao are packed with herbal base broth, wolf berries and tender pieces of meat from its brownish appearance. It is prepared through many hours of simmering pork ribs with a mixture of fragrant herbs, pepper and garlic. The broth is aromatic, not too oily and the meat readily disintegrates in the mouth. For the price of $5.20, this bamboo steamer of three BKT XLB is certainly value-for-money and a must-try!

咸蛋三文脆鱼皮 Salted Egg Salmon Fish Skin ($12)

Many Singaporeans seem to have a penchant for salted egg dishes and this unassuming plate of salted egg salmon fish skin is definitely an appetiser to go for, well, regardless if you love salted egg. Prior to eating this, I had my reservation because I’ve tasted crispy fish skin that were too salty. It surprised me when I instantly fell in love with Yum Cha’s salted egg salmon fish skin at the first bite and brazenly reached out for my second and third pieces. The fish skin is fried to perfection and coated with crumbs of salted egg, it is so crunchy, you wish you were indulging in this alone and no one turns around to watch you munching it. Simply addictive! My only gripe is to have a separate bowl of salted egg sauce for dipping (which is so sinful).

奶皇炸煎堆 Sesame Custard Ball ($3.20 / 3pcs )

Yum Cha’s Sesame Custard Ball is one of the latest gems in their menu. Firm and chewy on the outside while filled with warm, wobbly thick custard on the inside. I love the overall texture and sweet taste of the smooth, creamy custard! A dish that will satisfy any sweet tooth.

咸香虾丸 Salted Egg Prawn Ball ($4.20 / 3pcs)

There is something about the dim sum at Yum Cha, all their dishes contain a mellow fragrance and are well-executed to give noteworthy texture and taste. Deep fried prawn ball with salted egg is yet another addictive combo. I enjoyed the savoury crispy exterior and fresh bouncy prawn meat that goes along. This is probably an understated dish that is worth ordering for prawn lovers.

竹炭鸭 Charcoal Duck Buns ($5.80 / 3pcs)

Here is one of my favourite dishes of the evening! We have always heard of chicken and pork buns, how about duck? The Charcoal Duck Bun is another new and exciting introduction on Yum Cha’s menu. As its name suggests, the bun is prepared in a way to resemble the look and feel of charcoal – black, crisp and rough. Its crumbly and crisp bun complement the sweet and gooey fillings very well and I love the flavourful and generous duck filling that is sweet like honey.

竹雕花雕白灼虾 Poached Prawns with Chinese Wine ($20)

This hearty basket of big fleshy prawn is a highly prized dish in Chinese cuisines. The freshness of the prawns at Yum Cha is remarkable, so diners can get their cravings for firm, juicy, meaty prawns fixed right here. Marinated with Chinese wine, the flavour is enhanced. I personally prefer the flavour of the Chinese wine to be stronger.

瑶柱灌湯餃 Y.C. Dry Scallop Soup Dumpling ($9.80)

Wrap up the meal with a comforting bowl of Dry Scallop Soup Dumpling. This dish is impressive as it interestingly encased all its ingredients within a massive dumpling. Break open the dumpling and you will find a variety of nourishing contents such as scallop, fish maw, crab meat and mushrooms. Infused with loads of nutrients, this soup is light and delicious, I enjoyed every mouthful of it.

I am impressed with the quality of the dim sum at Yum Cha and it has just made its way to the top of my dim sum list!

Thanks Kieffer for the invite!
