Festive Dim Sum Treats & New Express Kiosk at Yum Cha!

Set to steal the hearts of many, Yum Cha has just taken its Dim Sum to a new level, boasting a line of limited edition & Instagram-worthy adorable steamed buns (baos) to celebrate this festive season! Recalling the standard of the dishes I’ve tried at Yum Cha, I was eager to return for more. Thus, this extension of Yum Cha’s menu and the introduction of its new takeaway concept, Yum Cha Express, was the perfect moment to seize!

Christmas Festive Combination ($8.80)

Giving its dishes a modern interpretation and a touch of the festive season, Yum Cha surprised us with this beautiful Western-Chinese inspired dish featuring the Five Spice Turkey Roll, Roasted Turkey Bun and Cranberry Spring Roll with Chicken Floss. Can you spot a mini turkey sitting in the middle of the dish?

The Five Spice Turkey Roll is more popularly known as ‘Ngoh Hiang’ with Turkey fillings. The Turkey Roll was really good, with crisp tofu skin, fragrant Turkey patty packed with savoury flavours and topped off with zingy and sweet-tart cranberry sauce. In addition, a Roasted Turkey Bun is a rare item that you’ve got to try. It was made with generous chunks of turkey bits mixed in a gooey concoction, so savoury and tucked within a sweet, roasted bun. Lastly, the dish was complete with a sweet Cranberry Spring Roll made using cranberry-drizzled chicken floss. Overall, the taste of the sweet Cranberry Spring Roll was a tad too sweet.

Little Twin Piglets ($1.90 each)

Panda Bao ($1.90 each) – to be launched in 2018

Look at the adorable Little Twin Piglets and Panda baos, the chef has nailed the appearance of these red bean buns! These two cute creations are only available at Yum Cha Chinatown Restaurant and the new Yum Cha Chinatown Express Kiosk (which you will read about below). Bite into the buns and taste the familiar, sweet and rich red bean paste, which reminds you of home.

Snowman Bao ($3.80 each) Another Christmas-inspired dish to go crazy over its cuteness. Though the price is on the higher side, what you are getting is a combination of two different flavoured buns! The head was filled with red bean paste and the body, with lotus paste and lotus seed to add texture.

Deep Fried Wasabi Duck Roll ($9.80)

Here’s a new dish that you can’t miss! The crispy duck roll had a nice overall taste and texture. I love how it was crunchy outside yet soft and fluffy inside. I am not a huge fan of wasabi but I enjoyed the mild wasabi flavour that tasted sweet and creamy. It went well with the duck meat.

Egg Plant with Minced Meat Stew ($16.80)

Moving on to the traditional dishes, Yum Cha never fail to impress with its execution and taste. I am still thinking about this wonderfully fragrant clay pot of Eggplant with Minced Meat Stew today! The sauce was well-soaked into the meat and eggplant, endowing the dish with great braised flavour and umami. The eggplant was also well-softened and tasty. The best part? It has the wok-hei flavour. Definitely a dish I would order again when I return to Yum Cha!

Pork Ribs with Black Pepper Sauce ($24)

Check out this chewy and peppery goodness. The pork ribs are so tender and succulent with some crunchiness on the outside. The black pepper sauce goes well with the rib and is not overpowering. Every mouthful was satisfying.

Braised Pig Trotter with Vinegar ($9.80)

This is another dish of the evening that I’ll come back for. The Braised Pig Trotter was aromatic and reminds you of the traditional taste that contains stronger sour notes from the black vinegar, as compared to the sweeter versions you commonly find. The meat was simmered till it succulent and tender. In addition, the clay pot was packed with ingredients, a good portion for sharing amongst 2 or 3 over a meal of dim sum. A hearty bowl that warms the body and nourishes one.

Fragrant Fried Rice with Seafood ($16)

This large plate of fragrant fried rice is good for sharing with a large group of 5 or 6 over a meal of dim sum. Lavished with a number of fresh prawns, seafood and crunchy salted fish, giving a good texture to each bite, it was hard to commit to a low-carb diet. My only gripe was the lack of wok-hei flavour.

Mango Sago Pomelo Dessert ($4.80)

One of the popular dessert to wrap up a Cantonese meal is with Mango Sago Pomelo. The slightly chilled dessert provided a light, milky texture. The mango sago cream was sweet, while the pomelo added tanginess. Combined with diced mango fruits and mini sagos, it was a good ending to a delightful meal.
